Emergency and Rescue Communications Network

Western Australian beaches are about to become significantly safer, thanks to a $1.35 million investment from BHP Billiton.

BHP Billiton is investing in a new state of the art emergency and rescue communications network for Surf Life Saving WA, which will address black spots (areas with no communication) and brown spots (areas with limited communication) within SLSWA-serviced areas on the WA coast, all the way from Esperance to Yanchep.

The upgrade will also improve communications between our lifesavers and lifeguards on the beach, in the water and in the air; as well as communications with other emergency services such as the Water Police, the Volunteer Marine Rescue and other marine authorities.

Furthermore, it will allow our lifesavers and lifeguards to communicate more effectively with our central surf communications facility, SurfCom.
